Tbh this is pretty general for beyond science too! But science has a reputation that you don’t need to network - and that just isn’t true! Building a network and learning about careers early on is so important!

Also note about LinkedIn: it’s a recent change that in order to reach out to people you aren’t connected with, you can’t just send a cold message intro without the premium subscription. It is a pretty penny, but seriously SUCH a good place to invest in - your career!!

Some of the things I love about science ❤️🧬

I’ve found it hard lately to be vocal with everything going on. I feel like I’m marching into battle just by existing as a scientist in the middle of disinformation, misinformation, or downright ignoring of the truth.

It’s the atmosphere. Better to stay quiet that I believe the science of climate change, that I believe in vaccines, that I believe in science as an institution (even though it does have it flaws *cough* academia *cough*), or I might get cancelled.

I guess this is me reminding the world that science is done by scientists and scientists are human, just like the rest of us. We believe in truth, we believe in change, and we can also be hurt when those in power see our entire pursuit for knowledge as fraudulent.

We are more than the people called out in the news in white lab coats. We are your friends, your family, your colleagues. Do you discredit all of us just because the latest TikTok says so?

Before there were infinite opinions at the click of a button, before introducing fact checkers and the ability to critique anyone anywhere anonymously, there was science. Science is the bedrock of human understanding. Science is the world around us. I hope you save a place in your heart for science because, regardless of your views or how many science classes you took in school, we all have the ability to be scientists. To look at the world around us critically, gather information, form hypotheses, test hypotheses, and continue building upon thousands of years of knowledge.

Science is for everyone.❤️

Sorry everyone for the radio silence🫶 I wish I could say I planned to take a couple weeks off, but I really didn’t know how much sharing grad school stuff would be like re-opening a wound I’ve repressed for a year. I spent a lot of the holidays processing and healing with family and friends, and it was absolutely magical 🥰 I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season!

Instead of fixing the system, they tell us we aren

Instead of fixing the system, they tell us we aren’t cut out for it.

Instead of sharing the possibilities of science, they tell us we aren’t scientists if we leave the bench. Instead of giving us equal pay, they tell us we are selling out if we go where the money is.

I’m taken aback how many people resonated with the ramblings I posted yesterday. I was (and still am) so angry with a system that continues to not support the very people it is designed to protect - students.

I know it’s a more common problem than we let on; we try to bury it deep down so we can move on with our lives. We think it must be only us who experienced it the worst because they *must* have seen how terribly we were treated and make change happen. And then you hear another story after you leave, of the same old story happening YET AGAIN.

I’ve spent the last year trying to chug on like nothing happened, when behind the scenes they kept finding new ways to break me.

I’m blown away by the support and the understanding from all of you. I took the rest of yesterday off social media so I wouldn’t say anything I might later regret 😅. But I am going to read every single comment, DM, text, that has been sent to me in the past 24 hours. I feel a lot of emotions. Relief that I’m not the only one struggling post-PhD, apprehension about getting into the dirty details, sadness how many people have also experienced similar problems within academia, and a sense of pride for the number of people I’ve connected with who want to make real change happen. I know we can’t change academia overnight, but I’m open to any and all suggestions how we can work together to make a better academia for future students. Because part of the sadness is seeing so many people about to enter a PhD and knowing most schools do not provide adequate resources to get through.

I am so thankful for you all. Truly. Despite the mess that grad school left of me, I also recognize the benefits from grad school. You guys, my Miami friends, the career opportunities, the job I have now. But you shouldn’t have to offer up your sanity, your life, for the possibility of getting through.

Lunchtime thoughts. Tired of being silent for a system that doesn’t care.

Wasn’t sure if this was going to go anywhere. I filmed it a couple days ago realizing I was in a rut.

But I found out some news this morning that made me so angry. So upset about a system that shows over and over again how much it doesn’t care. And then I gave a talk this afternoon about the importance of talking about stuff you feel passionately about even if it’s hard, but I’m not holding myself to that same standard anymore. So I should start.

Bear with me because there’s a lot I still need to work through, but boy is there a lot I want to cover.

Let me know what you want to hear about. I’m not in academia anymore 😈🤭 so the only filter is what I’m not ready to talk about 😅
